Google Vehicle Ads for Dealers: How to Set Them Up in 2026

Google vehicle ads for dealers need a verified license, a clean VIN feed and photos without overlays. Industry estimates put cost per lead at $15 to $45.

To set up Google vehicle ads for dealers, you turn on the vehicle ads add-on in Google Merchant Center, verify your dealer license, send a feed with one row per VIN from your DMS, and run that feed in a Standard Shopping or Performance Max campaign in Google Ads. For the social side of the same inventory, our recommendation is A21 Social, which turns your listings into short videos and posts them, from $49 a month. A21 Social publishes this guide.

Step What to do Where
Account Turn on the vehicle ads add-on and submit your dealer license Google Merchant Center
Feed Add your store, then send VIN, mileage, price and store code from your DMS Merchant Center and Google Business Profile
Website Show VIN, mileage, price and availability on every VDP without extra clicks Your dealer website
Photos Send clean photos with no text, logos or watermarks DMS or photo tool
Campaign Launch Standard Shopping or Performance Max with a daily budget Google Ads

What you need before you start

You need a Merchant Center account, a Google Ads account, a Google Business Profile for your rooftop, a valid dealer license, a physical lot, clean-title inventory and a DMS or inventory tool that can export one row per vehicle. Google vehicle ads (also called vehicle listing ads) are ads built from that vehicle feed. Each offer is a single car identified by its VIN and linked to its vehicle detail page (VDP).

Vehicle ads are fully released in 4 countries: Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States. In those markets you can switch the add-on on directly in Merchant Center.

Google's vehicle ads policies add these conditions:

  • A valid dealership license where your local jurisdiction requires one.
  • A physical location that customers can visit.
  • Vehicles for sale in only 1 state per account.
  • No brokers.
  • A clean title on every car. Salvage, lien or any other title defect makes the vehicle ineligible.

Some inventory can't run at all: motorcycles, boats, planes, farm vehicles, go-karts, race cars, vehicles that need a commercial or special license, auctions or auction pricing, parts, accessories, tires, services and subscriptions. In the US, Google expanded vehicle ads in May 2026 to ATVs, RVs, UTVs and non-motorized trailers such as travel trailers and campers. If you sell RVs, our RV dealership marketing guide covers the video side of that inventory.

Your DMS export has to map to Google's vehicle data specification. The VIN must be 17 characters. Map these fields:

Field What Google wants Where it usually comes from
vin The 17-character VIN DMS vehicle record
id Stock number or VIN DMS stock number
price Amount plus currency, such as "8000.00 USD" Your advertised price, identical to the VDP
condition New or Used DMS
brand, model, year Make, model without trim specifics, 4-digit year DMS
mileage Odometer reading with the unit (km or miles) DMS odometer field
color OEM exterior color DMS
image_link 1 image of that specific car Photo tool or DMS
additional_image_link Up to 10 more images of that specific car Photo tool or DMS
google_product_category 916 (Cars, Trucks & Vans) Fixed value
link The VDP URL Website provider
vehicle_fulfillment in_store or online Fixed value per store
store_code Unique code per dealership, case-sensitive, matching your Business Profile Fixed value per rooftop

New cars need one more field. The vehicle_all_in_price is required for new vehicles in the US and optional for used ones. It includes freight, PDI, accessories and dealer fees for handling licensing. It leaves out sales tax, plate and registration costs, any trade-in and financing costs. If MSRP differs from your selling price, the VDP must also show the MSRP, labeled as MSRP.

How to set up Google vehicle ads for dealers: step by step

Setup moves from Merchant Center to your website to Google Ads. Google's own activation flow has 3 steps: add stores, add vehicles through a data source, then pass a website policy review. The steps below add the license check and the campaign launch to that flow.

1. Turn on the vehicle ads add-on in Merchant Center

Open your Merchant Center account and enable the Vehicle ads add-on, which Google offers directly in the account for US merchants. Google allows vehicles for sale in only 1 state per account, so plan one account per state if your group crosses state lines.

2. Submit your dealer license for verification

Apply through Google's dealership license verification form. Send a state vehicle dealer license, a sales license, permit information or a business registration. Google won't accept a driver's license or sales receipts.

3. Add your store with a store code that matches your Business Profile

Add each rooftop in Merchant Center with a valid physical address, a unique store code, active status and the "Store and Shopping" category. The store_code in your feed is case-sensitive and must match the code in your Google Business Profile exactly. Example: a feed that sends "Main01" while the profile says "MAIN01" counts as a mismatch.

4. Export your vehicle feed from the DMS

Send the feed as a file, a Google Sheet or through the API, and keep that data source to vehicle offers only. Submit each car once by VIN, add the unit to every mileage value, and set google_product_category to 916. Ask your DMS or website provider to map its fields to the table above. Schedule the export so price changes reach Google the same day they reach your site.

5. Make every VDP show VIN, mileage and price on load

Google's website review checks that each landing page shows dealership name, location, price, VIN, mileage for used cars and availability, clearly visible on load with no extra clicks. The feed price must exactly match the VDP price, and mileage must be accurate in both places. A price hidden behind a "click for price" button fails that test.

6. Send photos that pass Google's image rules

Google needs at least 500 x 500 pixels and recommends 1500 x 1500 or above, a 4:3 ratio and files up to 16 MB. It disapproves watermarks, superimposed logos or text, placeholder images and cropped shots. Stock images are allowed only for new cars, and only when they show the same make, model and color. Lead with a front-to-side angle of about 45 degrees, and use our shot list for dealership car photos for the rest of the set.

7. Link Google Ads and choose Standard Shopping or Performance Max

Link Google Ads to Merchant Center and your Business Profile, then start a new campaign. For Standard Shopping, wait until your Merchant Center account has approved vehicle offers, then choose the "Shopping" type, select your vehicle data source and pick the "Standard Shopping campaign" subtype. PPC Land spotted Google's help page for this option on May 3, 2026, and Search Engine Roundtable noted on May 11, 2026 that vehicle ads were previously available only in Performance Max.

Campaign type Vehicle ads since What Google and trade press point out
Standard Shopping May 2026 Bid strategies: Manual CPC, target CPA, target ROAS, Maximize Clicks or Maximize Conversions
Performance Max Before May 2026, as the only option Upload your own video assets so Google doesn't auto-generate videos, and use account-level placement exclusions to keep ads off irrelevant sites or apps such as mobile games
Both together Supported Google says they can be used together for cross-channel goals

8. Set bidding and a daily budget

Pick a bid strategy and a daily or total campaign budget. Google's Standard Shopping help page gives no budget amount, so use the vendor and industry figures in the next section as your starting range. If you run Performance Max, add your own videos and placement exclusions before launch.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

Setup time depends mostly on how fast your license and website pass Google's review, and Google's activation page lists the steps but gives no review time. For spend, vendor Demand Local reports Google's suggestion as $100 a day or $3,000 a month, and Dealers United puts the cost per lead most dealers aim for at $25 to $45, an industry estimate.

The slow parts are usually on your side: getting VDPs to show VIN, mileage and price on load, cleaning watermarks out of photo exports, and matching store codes. Start the license form on day one, because the campaign can't serve until Merchant Center has approved vehicle offers.

Figure What it is Source type
$100 a day or $3,000 a month Budget Demand Local attributes to Google for local dealerships, with a $1,000 monthly minimum. No Google help page we opened states it. Vendor report, January 2026
$20 to $30 a day Starting daily budget suggested for small dealerships Industry estimate, Dealers United, May 2025
$25 to $45 Cost per lead most dealers aim for Industry estimate, Dealers United
$15 to $25 Cost per lead for top performers Industry estimate, Dealers United
$38.86 Average cost per lead for automotive-for-sale campaigns, April 2024 to March 2025 WordStream data cited by Demand Local

Example: a store that spends $3,000 in a month and lands at the $38.86 average would get about 77 leads. At the $15 top-performer cost per lead, the same spend would bring about 200.

Compare those numbers with what you already pay. Dealer tracking from February 2024 put CarGurus below $40 per lead and Cars.com below $50 per lead. If you hire an agency to run Google for you, its fee comes on top of ad spend. Our guide to automotive marketing agencies suggests hiring only one that gives you a written price.

Who should do this?

Google vehicle ads fit franchise and independent dealers with clean-title inventory in 1 state, a dealer license, a physical lot and VDPs that show VIN, mileage and price on load. Google's policies exclude brokers, auction-priced inventory and salvage or lien-title cars.

Split the work by who controls each piece. Your DMS or website provider owns the feed export and the VDP layout. Pick one person at the store, such as the internet or marketing manager, to own Merchant Center diagnostics and the Google Ads budget and to check both every week. If nobody in-house has the time, an agency can take that part over.

Google's photo rules keep your logo, price banners and offer text off vehicle ads images, so your brand has to show up somewhere else. A21 Social handles that for the same cars. It reads your listings from Cars.com and CarGurus, uses AI to build a short vertical video for each car from the listing photos and details, and posts it automatically to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. Nobody on your team films or edits, and you don't need an agency for it.

Run the two side by side: Merchant Center carries the clean-photo feed to Google, and A21 Social puts each listing on your own social channels as it goes live. A21 Social imports listings from Cars.com and CarGurus only, so it doesn't pull in Autotrader listings, and it doesn't post to Facebook Marketplace. For paid inventory ads on Meta, see our Facebook automotive inventory ads setup.

A21 Social plans cost $49, $129 or $199 a month plus applicable sales tax. To get started, connect your Cars.com or CarGurus listings on the Starter plan.

Common mistakes

Google disapproves vehicle ads for photo overlays and crops, title defects, and VDPs or feeds where VIN, mileage, price or store code don't line up. Run through this checklist before every feed change.

Problem What Google's rule says Fix
Logo, text or price banner on the photo No superimposed logos or text Export unbranded photos for the Google feed
Watermark No overlaid watermarks Turn off watermarking for this feed in your photo tool
"Photo coming soon" image No placeholder images Hold the car out of the feed until real photos load
Cropped car Truncated images are disapproved Reshoot with the whole car in frame
Stock photo on a used car Stock images allowed only for new cars matching make, model and color Use real photos on every used car
Small photo Minimum 500 x 500 pixels Send 1500 x 1500 or above
Salvage or lien title Any title defect is ineligible Filter those units out of the feed
VIN, mileage or price missing on the VDP Must be visible on load with no extra clicks Move them to the top of the VDP
Feed price differs from VDP price Must match exactly Push price changes to feed and site together
Mileage with no unit Include the unit (km or miles) Add "miles" to the value
Store code mismatch Case-sensitive, must match the Business Profile Copy the code exactly from the profile
Same car sent twice Submit each vehicle once by VIN Remove duplicates by VIN
Ineligible vehicle type Motorcycles, boats, auction pricing and others are not eligible Filter by vehicle type

Google discourages some things without disapproving them: logos or branding in the background, modified license plates, a cluttered background and a rear angle as the main image. Fix them when you reshoot, since the recommended main image is a front-to-side angle.

Pricing also has a legal side outside Google's review. On March 13, 2026, the FTC sent warning letters to 97 auto dealership groups saying advertised prices must include all mandatory fees. Google's vehicle_all_in_price field for new cars also includes dealer fees for handling licensing.

How to check it worked

Check Merchant Center for approved and disapproved vehicles after every feed upload. After your first full month, compare your Google Ads cost per conversion with industry estimates of $15 to $45 per lead. Both reports are built into the platforms, so you don't need extra tools.

What to measure Where When
Approved vs. disapproved vehicles Merchant Center product status After each feed upload
Account issues, including vehicle data quality Merchant Center account issues Every week
Website policy review result Merchant Center vehicle ads activation After you submit your stores and feed
Clicks, conversions and cost per conversion Google Ads campaign report After your first full month
Leads and sold cars from Google vs. Cars.com and CarGurus Your CRM Every month

Since mid-April 2026, Google shows vehicle data quality in account issues, and vehicle data must match landing page content to stay approved. A car whose feed price drifts from its VDP price can drop out, so read that report after every price change.

For leads, compare your cost per conversion with the WordStream average of $38.86 that Demand Local cites. If you're above $45 after a full month, work through disapprovals and data quality issues before you raise the budget.

How we checked this guide

In November 2026 we read Google's Merchant Center and Google Ads help pages on vehicle ads policies, image guidelines, activation, the data specification and Standard Shopping, plus the Merchant Center announcements change log. We also read trade press coverage from PPC Land and Search Engine Roundtable and vendor blogs from Dealers United and Demand Local. None of the Google help pages we opened states the daily budget that vendors credit to Google, and Google's help pages carry no publish dates. The change log has no entry for the Standard Shopping launch, so that date comes from trade press. Every figure in this guide links to its source.

If you want the same cars on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube while Google runs the clean-photo ads, try A21 Social. Plans start at $49 a month on the A21 Social pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put my dealership logo on Google vehicle ads photos?

No. Google's vehicle ads image guidelines do not allow superimposed logos or text, overlaid watermarks or placeholder images. A logo that happens to appear in the background, such as on your building, is discouraged but does not cause a disapproval. Put your branding in your social videos and keep the Google feed photos clean.

What are the Google vehicle ads image requirements for size?

Google sets a minimum of 500 x 500 pixels and recommends 1500 x 1500 pixels or above. Files can be up to 64 megapixels and 16 MB, and a 4:3 aspect ratio is recommended. Google accepts GIF, JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIFF and WebP files.

Can salvage title cars run on Google vehicle ads?

No. Google's vehicle ads policies say every vehicle listed must have a clean title. Vehicles with any title defect, including salvage and lien titles, are ineligible. Filter those units out of your feed before it reaches Merchant Center.

Does Google vehicle ads require VIN and mileage on the VDP?

Yes. The landing page must show the dealership name, location, price, VIN, mileage for used vehicles and availability as soon as the page loads, with no extra clicks. Mileage must be accurate on the page and in the feed. The feed price must also match the VDP price exactly.

Why does my Google vehicle ads store code not match my Business Profile?

Google treats store_code as case-sensitive, so it must match the code in your Google Business Profile character for character. A code in lowercase in one place and uppercase in the other counts as a mismatch. Copy the code straight from the profile into your feed settings and check again after any DMS change.

How do I verify my dealer license in Google Merchant Center?

Fill out Google's vehicle ads dealership license application form from the Merchant Center Help Center. Google accepts a state vehicle dealer license, sales license, permit information or business registration. A driver's license or sales receipts do not count.

What is the Google vehicle listing ads cost per lead?

Google does not publish a cost per lead. Dealers United, an industry vendor, says most dealers aim for 25 to 45 dollars per lead, with top performers at 15 to 25 dollars. Demand Local cites WordStream data showing an average of 38.86 dollars per lead for automotive-for-sale campaigns from April 2024 to March 2025.

Can I run Google vehicle ads in Standard Shopping instead of Performance Max?

Yes. Google added Standard Shopping as an option for vehicle ads in May 2026. Before that, vehicle ads ran only in Performance Max. Standard Shopping supports Manual CPC, target CPA, target ROAS, Maximize Clicks and Maximize Conversions, and Google says the 2 campaign types can also run together.
