Facebook Automotive Inventory Ads: 2026 Setup for Dealers
Facebook automotive inventory ads need a vehicle catalog with 14 required fields, Meta pixel events and a catalog sales campaign. Here is the 2026 setup.

To set up Facebook automotive inventory ads, you build a vehicle catalog that carries Meta's 14 required fields for every car, add vehicle events to the Meta pixel on your website, and launch a catalog sales campaign so Meta generates an ad for each vehicle. For turning those same listings into short videos that post automatically to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, our recommendation is A21 Social, from $49 a month. A21 Social publishes this guide.
| Step | What to do | Meta rule to meet |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Vehicle catalog | Send every car in an inventory feed | 14 required fields, vehicle_id through state_of_vehicle |
| 2. Photos | Attach real photos to each car | At least 1 and up to 20 images per vehicle, 4 MB each; 2 minimum for Marketplace |
| 3. Pixel events | Fire Search, ViewContent and AddToWishlist on your site | ViewContent and AddToWishlist need content_ids listing your vehicle IDs |
| 4. Campaign | Create a catalog sales campaign | Objective PRODUCT_CATALOG_SALES, website destination by default |
| 5. Financing ads | Check the Special Ad Category | Required for US financial products and services campaigns since January 14, 2025 |
What you need before you start
You need a Facebook Page, a website with vehicle detail pages and the Meta pixel, and an inventory feed that can send Meta's required fields for every car. Get the feed right first, because Meta builds every ad from what the feed sends.
Automotive inventory ads are Meta ads built from your vehicle catalog. Meta describes them as ads that use cross-device intent signals and automatically generate a creative for each vehicle, so you don't design one ad per car.
A vehicle catalog is the list of cars, one row per vehicle, that Meta reads from your feed. Meta's vehicle catalog reference lists 14 required fields, each with its own rule:
| Field | What it holds | Meta's rule |
|---|---|---|
| vehicle_id | Your unique ID for the car | Up to 100 characters; the VIN can be used here |
| title | Headline for the car | Up to 500 characters |
| description | Vehicle description | Up to 5,000 characters |
| url | Link to the vehicle detail page | Default ad destination |
| make | Manufacturer | Required |
| model | Model name | Required |
| year | Model year | Required |
| mileage.value | Odometer reading | Use 0 for new vehicles |
| mileage.unit | Distance unit | MI or KM |
| image[0].url | First photo | At least 1 image, up to 20, each up to 4 MB |
| body_style | Body type | CONVERTIBLE, COUPE, HATCHBACK, MINIVAN, TRUCK, SUV, SEDAN, VAN, WAGON, CROSSOVER, SMALL_CAR or OTHER |
| price | Vehicle price | Required |
| exterior_color | Paint color | Required |
| state_of_vehicle | Condition | New, Used or CPO |
While you map the feed, add these fields too:
- vin: optional for inventory ads, but it must be exactly 17 characters. Pre-1983 vehicles don't need one.
- availability: optional; available or not_available. Meta doesn't show unavailable vehicles in the ad.
- fb_page_id: required if you send shoppers to an on-Facebook destination.
- sale_price: optional; the sale or special price.
- address: required for the dealership. Send it as one field or as separate fields. Using both formats results in an error.
You also need photos ready. If your photo sets are thin, our shot list for dealership car photos covers what to shoot and in which order.
How to set up Facebook automotive inventory ads: step by step
You set up Facebook automotive inventory ads in this order: feed, photos, pixel, campaign, then video and financing settings. You can hand each step below to your feed provider, web vendor or ad manager as a single task.
1. Map your feed to Meta's 14 required fields
Ask your DMS, website or feed provider to export every vehicle with all 14 required fields in Meta's exact values. Use MI for mileage.unit, 0 for mileage on new cars, and New, Used or CPO for state_of_vehicle. Body style must be one of Meta's listed values, such as SUV, TRUCK or CROSSOVER, so a feed that says "Pickup" needs mapping.
2. Attach real photos sized for each ad format
Send at least 1 image per car and up to 20, each up to 4 MB. Carousel ads use square 1:1 images at 600x600 pixels, and single vehicle ads use 1.91:1 images at 1200x630 pixels. For Marketplace, Meta's reference sets a 2-image minimum and requires vehicles to have over 500 miles.
3. Set availability so sold cars drop out
Send availability as available or not_available on every row. Meta doesn't show unavailable vehicles in the ad, so a feed that updates when a car sells keeps sold units out of your ads.
4. Add Search, ViewContent and AddToWishlist events to your website
Have your web vendor fire Search on inventory search results pages, ViewContent on vehicle detail, model, offer and incentive pages, and AddToWishlist when a shopper saves or favorites a car. ViewContent and AddToWishlist must carry content_ids, an array of vehicle IDs that match the vehicle_id values in your feed. If you send content_type, set it to vehicle. Currency is required whenever you send price.
5. Create a campaign with the catalog sales objective
Create a campaign with the PRODUCT_CATALOG_SALES objective and point it at your vehicle catalog. Meta's developer guide names this objective for promoting a vehicle catalog, so ask your agency or vendor for it by name.
6. Choose a website or on-Facebook destination
If you don't set destination_type at the ad set level, your ads send shoppers to the website URL in your catalog. Setting destination_type=FACEBOOK sends them to an on-Facebook destination instead, and that route requires fb_page_id in your feed. The website route sends shoppers to the pages where your pixel events from step 4 fire.
7. Write one ad template with vehicle tags
Write the ad text once and let template tags such as {{vehicle.make}}, {{vehicle.price}}, {{vehicle.mileage}} and {{vehicle.dealer_name}} fill in each car. Check the price in a live preview, because whatever your feed sends in the price field shows up in every ad.
8. Add video where your provider supports it
Meta added video to its automated catalog ads, which had been limited to still images, with videos running across Reels, Feed and Stories (Social Media Today, May 21, 2024). Meta's creative tip is to hook viewers in the first 2 seconds and show the call to action within 5 to 6 seconds.
Video vendor Phyron cites Meta internal studies showing 17% higher conversions when campaigns combined images and video. Phyron calls the format Product Level Video, announced by Meta in January 2024. Meta's vehicle catalog reference lists only image fields, so ask your feed or video vendor how they attach a video URL.
9. Turn on the Special Ad Category for financing campaigns
Since January 14, 2025, Meta requires the Special Ad Category for financial products and services campaigns based in the US or shown to US audiences. Those campaigns get ages fixed at 18 through 65+, a location radius of at least 15 miles and no lookalike audiences. Meta's page does not name auto loans specifically, so ask your compliance team whether a financing offer falls under it.
How long does it take and what does it cost?
The Meta automotive ads developer pages we read list no fixed price, so your cost is the ad budget you set plus whatever your feed or video vendor charges. Time depends on your feed: if it already exports Meta's required fields, most of the work is the pixel and the campaign.
You do most of the work once. After the feed syncs and the pixel fires, you check for rejected vehicles, refresh ad text and review results.
| Cost item | Who sets the price | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Meta ad spend | You, through your campaign budget | No rate card on Meta's automotive ads developer pages |
| Vehicle feed and catalog | Your DMS, website or feed vendor | Ask your vendor; it varies by contract |
| Video for catalog ads | Your video vendor | Phyron gives prices on request only, per our AI video tools roundup |
| Organic listing videos | A21 Social | Starter $49, Pro $129, Enterprise $199 a month, plus applicable sales tax (pricing, checked October 27, 2026) |
Example: An independent lot whose website vendor already exports a Meta feed spends its setup time on the pixel events and the campaign. A lot that tracks inventory in a spreadsheet first has to build all 14 required fields for every car before any ad can run.
Who should do this?
Any franchise or independent dealer who wants inventory in front of Facebook shoppers should run automotive inventory ads, because paid ads are the business route Meta kept when it ended dealer Page listings on Marketplace. If your lot has no usable inventory feed, fix the feed first.
Meta closed the free dealer routes in stages. First, Marketplace stopped distributing vehicle listings from partner catalog feeds on September 13, 2021, while the Vehicles tab and automotive inventory ads stayed.
Then, starting January 30, 2023, Meta stopped supporting vehicle listings created from a Facebook business Page and retired the vehicles and manage inventory tabs. For vehicles, the change covered the U.S., Canada, France, the U.K., Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Germany and Australia.
Free person-to-person listings stayed, and Meta said the ability for businesses to reach audiences via ads was not changing. So inventory ads are the paid replacement for Page listings. Our post on Facebook Marketplace rules for car dealers covers the other option, salespeople posting from their own profiles.
| Your situation | Do inventory ads fit? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your feed provider already exports a Meta vehicle catalog | Yes, start now | Setup is mostly pixel and campaign work |
| You track inventory without a feed | Yes, after the feed exists | Every car needs the required fields first |
| You run financing promotions | Yes, with the Special Ad Category on those campaigns | Meta limits targeting on US financial services campaigns |
| You also sell on TikTok | Compare with TikTok's own inventory ads | TikTok reports 41% lower CPA for its Automotive Inventory Ads in US data from October 2024 to January 2025 |
Inventory ads cover the paid side. Meta's vehicle catalog has no video field, though, and your Page, Reels, TikTok and YouTube still need a post for each car. Our recommendation for that job is A21 Social. It uses AI to turn each listing's photos and details into a short vertical video, then posts it automatically to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
Nobody on your team films or edits, and you don't hire an agency, so your ad manager can stay on the catalog and campaigns while every car in your listings gets its video. To start, pick the Starter plan at $49 a month; Pro costs $129 and Enterprise $199, plus applicable sales tax.
Common mistakes
Each mistake below breaks a specific Meta rule or FTC expectation, and that is how a car drops out of your ads or a campaign runs the wrong way. You fix most of them in your feed.
- A VIN that isn't exactly 17 characters. Pre-1983 vehicles don't need one, but every other VIN must be the full length.
- Sending the address both as one field and as separate fields. Meta's reference says using both formats results in an error.
- Free-text body styles. "Pickup" or "Crew Cab" has to map to TRUCK, and anything without a match goes to OTHER.
- Real odometer readings on new cars. Meta wants 0 in mileage.value for new vehicles.
- Sold cars still marked available. Meta only hides vehicles set to not_available.
- Thin units on Marketplace. Meta's Marketplace rules call for over 500 miles and at least 2 images.
- Pixel events without vehicle IDs. ViewContent and AddToWishlist need content_ids, and price needs currency.
- Financing campaigns without the Special Ad Category, which Meta has required for US financial products and services campaigns since January 14, 2025.
- Feed prices that leave out mandatory fees. The FTC's withdrawal of the CARS Rule took effect February 12, 2026, and on March 13, 2026 the FTC warned 97 auto dealership groups that advertised prices must include all mandatory fees.
How to check it worked
Your setup worked when the catalog shows every available car, Meta receives your vehicle events with matching IDs, and Ads Manager shows delivery and clicks for individual vehicles. Check the catalog and pixel the same day you finish, then judge ad results after the first full week of spend and again each month.
| What to measure | Where to look | When |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicles in the catalog versus available cars on your lot, plus any rejected items | Your vehicle catalog in Meta Commerce Manager | The day of the first feed upload, then after sales and price changes |
| Search, ViewContent and AddToWishlist events arriving with content_ids | Meta Events Manager | Right after your web vendor installs them |
| Delivery, link clicks to vehicle pages and cost per result by vehicle | Meta Ads Manager | After the first full week of spend |
| Leads and sold units that came from Facebook | Your CRM next to Ads Manager | Monthly |
In the catalog review, flag cars with 500 miles or less or a single photo, since they miss Meta's Marketplace rules. In the monthly review, compare the advertised cars' days to turn with the rest of the lot. Our social media strategy guide uses the same monthly rhythm for organic posts.
How we checked this guide
In October 2026 we read Meta for Developers pages on automotive ads, including the vehicle catalog reference, the events guide and the ads management guide, plus Meta's Special Ad Categories page and the Federal Register notice withdrawing the CARS Rule. We also read a news report on Meta's Marketplace change, a dealer forum repost of Meta's earlier catalog notice, a trade press report and a vendor Q&A on video in catalog ads. Meta's Business Help Center pages did not load, so we could not verify Meta's catalog setup methods, its placement list for Marketplace or its own video spec for vehicle catalogs, and we left those out. Every figure in this guide links to its source.
If you want every car on your lot to get a posted video while your catalog runs the ads, try A21 Social. Plans start at $49 a month on the A21 Social pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
What are Facebook automotive inventory ads?
Facebook automotive inventory ads are Meta ads built from a dealer's vehicle catalog. Meta describes them as ads that use cross-device intent signals and automatically generate a creative for each vehicle. Each ad pulls details like make, price, mileage and photos from your feed, so the ads follow your inventory.
What fields are required for a Facebook vehicle feed?
Meta lists 14 required fields: vehicle_id, title, description, url, make, model, year, mileage.value, mileage.unit, image[0].url, body_style, price, exterior_color and state_of_vehicle. Mileage must be 0 for new vehicles. The state_of_vehicle field must say New, Used or CPO.
Can car dealers still post on Facebook Marketplace?
Not from a business Page. Meta stopped supporting vehicle listings created from Facebook business Pages on January 30, 2023, and retired the vehicles and manage inventory tabs. Free person-to-person listings stayed, so dealers can use paid automotive inventory ads or have salespeople post from their own profiles.
Why did Facebook remove dealer listings from Marketplace?
Meta announced in December 2022 that starting January 30, 2023 it would stop supporting vehicle listings created from business Pages in the U.S. and several other countries. It kept free person-to-person listings. Meta also said the ability for businesses to reach audiences through ads was not changing, which pointed commercial sellers to paid ads.
Do automotive inventory ads show on Facebook Marketplace?
Meta's vehicle catalog reference has rules written for Marketplace: each vehicle needs over 500 miles or kilometers and at least 2 images. Cars that miss those rules do not meet Meta's Marketplace requirements. Check the placements shown in your ad set in Ads Manager to see where your ads can run.
How many photos do you need for a Facebook vehicle catalog?
Meta requires at least 1 image per vehicle and accepts up to 20, each up to 4 MB. For Marketplace, the minimum is 2 images. Carousel ads use square 600x600 pixel images, and single vehicle ads use 1200x630 pixel images at a 1.91:1 ratio.
Can you use video in Facebook automotive inventory ads?
Meta added video to its automated catalog ads in 2024, with videos running across Reels, Feed and Stories. Video vendor Phyron calls the format Product Level Video and says dealers can add a video URL to their catalog ads. Meta's vehicle catalog reference lists only image fields, so ask your feed or video vendor how they attach the video.
Do I need Special Ad Category for car financing ads on Facebook?
Since January 14, 2025, Meta requires the Special Ad Category for financial products and services campaigns based in the United States or shown to US audiences. Those campaigns have ages fixed at 18 through 65+, a location radius of at least 15 miles and no lookalike audiences. Meta's page does not name auto loans specifically.
Why are my vehicles not showing in Facebook catalog ads?
Meta does not show vehicles marked not_available, so check the availability field first. A car can also drop out if a required field is missing, if body_style or state_of_vehicle uses a value Meta does not accept, or if the VIN is not exactly 17 characters. For Marketplace, cars with 500 miles or less or only 1 image miss Meta's rules.
