As a car dealer, you should ideally post on Instagram 3 to 5 times per week and on TikTok 2 to 5 times per week. Both figures come from Buffer analyses from 2025. They answer the question of how often a company without its own social media team should post. This guide shows how a small car dealership can maintain this rhythm over months: by using its own vehicle inventory as content and a fixed weekly plan for two platforms.

What you need before you start: how often your company should post on Instagram

Before you start, you need a fixed target per platform. The benchmark values are 3 to 5 Instagram posts and 2 to 5 TikToks per week, based on data from Buffer and from TikTok itself. You also need a professional Instagram account, a Facebook page, a TikTok account, and the free Meta Business Suite app.

By posting rhythm we mean the number of posts you publish per week on a platform. The following figures come from studies with disclosed data bases as well as from TikTok itself.

Platform Recommended rhythm Source Basis
Instagram 3 to 5 posts per week Buffer, August 13, 2025 2.1 million posts from over 102,000 accounts
TikTok 2 to 5 posts per week Buffer, October 8, 2025 11.4 million posts from over 150,000 accounts
TikTok 3 to 5 times per week TikTok for Business, September 5, 2024 Starter guide for small businesses
Facebook 1 to 2 times per day Hootsuite, April 18, 2025 Practical recommendations, statements from platform officials
Google My Business at least once per week Hootsuite, April 18, 2025 Practical recommendations, statements from platform officials

Buffer distinguishes several levels for Instagram: 1 to 2 posts per week keep the account active, 3 to 5 bring sustainable growth, 6 to 9 and more bring maximum growth. Posting 3 to 5 times instead of 1 to 2 times increases reach per post by around 12% and follower growth to more than double.

For TikTok, 2 to 5 posts according to Buffer achieve up to 17% more views per post than one post per week. Above all, with more videos the chance increases that individual clips take off. TikTok for Business justifies its recommendation by saying that this is how businesses find out what resonates best with their audience: „Post 3-5 times a week to see what resonates most with your audience.“

Hootsuite quotes Instagram head Adam Mosseri as saying that posting too often will not lose you followers: „posting too often will not lose you followers“. Hootsuite does not give a date or an original source for this.

How do you post regularly as a car dealership: step by step

You post regularly when you use your inventory as a fixed content source, film once a week, and plan everything in advance. With the following eight steps you can get started this very week.

1. Choose two platforms

Start with Instagram and a second platform, usually TikTok or Facebook. Instagram and Facebook both belong to Meta, so they can be scheduled in the same app. A third platform is only worthwhile once the rhythm on the first two has been solid for months.

2. Turn every vehicle in your inventory into content

Every car on the lot provides material for posts: new arrival, walkaround, interior details, handover. As long as you keep buying vehicles, you won't run out of topics. You can find more formats in the post Dealership Reels: 14 video ideas without a camera crew.

3. Create a fixed weekly plan

With a fixed plan, you don't have to decide every day anew what goes online today. One and the same video can be published simultaneously on Instagram and TikTok.

Example: this is what the weekly plan of a small used-car dealer could look like.

Day Instagram TikTok Facebook
Monday Reel: new arrival of the week same video post about the new arrival
Tuesday Story: vehicle being prepped no post no post
Wednesday, 12 noon Reel: walkaround of a vehicle same video post about the walkaround
Thursday, 9 am Photo series of a vehicle no post photo series
Friday Reel: detail or handover same video post about the handover

That results in 4 Instagram posts and 3 TikToks per week. Both figures fall within the ranges given by Buffer.

4. Film everything for the whole week in one session

Reserve a fixed weekly appointment during which you record the videos for all the days. Go through the week's new arrivals one after another, ideally in good daylight. That way you don't have to prepare the camera and the vehicle anew every day.

5. Schedule the posts in the Meta Business Suite

The Meta Business Suite app is free in the German App Store (accessed October 21, 2026). According to its description, you can "create, schedule and manage posts and stories on your Facebook page and your Instagram account" there. TikTok is not mentioned in the app description. You therefore upload your TikToks directly in the TikTok app.

6. Post at the best times

Buffer analyzed 9.6 million Instagram posts and determined the best time windows to be Thursday at 9 am, Wednesday at 12 noon, and Wednesday at 6 pm, each relative to your time zone. Wednesday is the strongest day, Friday and Saturday are the weakest. So show your most important vehicles in the middle of the week.

7. Answer comments and messages daily

Behind a question under a video there may be a purchase inquiry. According to the App Store description, the Meta Business Suite bundles messages and comments from Facebook and Instagram in one place. Check this inbox every working day and reply with price, availability, or a suggested appointment.

8. Check your Insights once a month

At the beginning of the month, schedule a fixed appointment to evaluate the previous month's figures. You can find out which values to keep an eye on in the last section of this guide.

How long does this take and what does it cost?

If you do everything yourself, no software costs arise, since the Meta Business Suite is free. You pay with working time: one fixed filming appointment per week and a daily look at the messages.

If nobody in-house wants to film and edit, software can take over this part. Comparing the two approaches (prices, as of October 21, 2026):

Approach Software costs per month Filming and editing Platforms Publishing
Yourself with the Meta Business Suite free handled by your team Facebook and Instagram, TikTok separately you schedule every post yourself
A21 Social Starter €29, Pro €79, Enterprise €149, plus VAT not needed, the videos are generated by AI from your listings Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube automatic

Who in the dealership should do this?

A fixed person should be responsible, someone who knows the inventory and can respond to inquiries immediately, usually someone from sales. This person keeps the filming appointment, maintains the weekly plan, and checks the inbox daily.

If that person lacks the time to film, we recommend A21 Social. A21 Social is the publisher of this blog and uses AI to create short vertical-format videos from your vehicle listings, specifically from the listing photos and vehicle data. The videos are automatically published on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. You need neither a camera nor an editing suite nor an agency for this.

Every video can additionally appear on your YouTube channel and can then be linked in the mobile.de listing. How to fill out the listing yourself completely is shown in the post mobile.de Quality Check: how dealers reach 100%. The responsible person then takes care of comments and messages and arranges test drives.

What mistakes do car dealerships most often make with social media?

The best-documented mistake is going silent for weeks after a strong start. Added to that are too many platforms at once, quantity over quality, wrong benchmark figures, and unanswered messages.

  • Pauses after the start: Buffer states: "Channels that don't post at all significantly under-perform their baseline growth rates." So accounts that don't post at all fall significantly behind their usual growth. In weeks without a post, follower growth was around 0.08 standard deviations below the usual level of the respective account.
  • Too many platforms: Stick to two channels and only add another once the rhythm there is solid.
  • Quantity over quality: Buffer also writes that the most important factor is probably still content quality. Later reaches the same conclusion: „creating quality content trumps quantity“.
  • Wrong benchmark figures: According to Hootsuite, companies posted on average 9.3 times per week on Instagram and 14.2 times on Facebook in Q1 2025. Sprout Social cites an industry average of 1 to 2 Instagram posts per day. Smaller accounts with up to 10,000 followers, however, post an average of 2 feed posts per week according to Later. So compare yourself to your own figures from the previous month.
  • Unanswered messages: Someone who has to wait days for a reply may well ask the next dealer instead.

How do you check whether it's working?

Once a month, check the Instagram Insights and the TikTok statistics of your account for reach per post, follower growth, and the number of messages about specific vehicles. A first reliable comparison is possible after the first full month in the new rhythm.

According to the App Store description, the Meta Business Suite provides insights into how users interact with your posts, stories, and ads. Note down the same figures every month:

  • Average reach per Instagram post in the month
  • Follower growth on Instagram and TikTok
  • Views per TikTok video and individual upward outliers
  • Messages and comments with questions about a vehicle
  • Days on the lot for the featured vehicles compared to the rest of the inventory

Buffer's data serves as a point of reference: accounts that switched from 1 to 2 to 3 to 5 Instagram posts per week achieved around 12% more reach per post there. That is a cross-industry average; your account may differ. How to reduce your overall days-on-lot is covered in the post Reducing days on lot: 7 steps for used-car dealers.

If you want to keep to the weekly plan without filming yourself, test A21 Social with your current inventory. You can find the plans starting at €29 per month plus VAT on the A21 Social pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How many times per week should you post Reels?

The sources evaluated here don't give a separate recommendation specifically for Reels. Based on 2.1 million Instagram posts (2025), Buffer recommends 3 to 5 posts per week for sustainable growth. If you implement these posts as Reels featuring vehicles from your inventory, you'll be within this range.

How many times per day should you post Instagram Stories?

Hootsuite (2025) quotes Instagram head Adam Mosseri recommending 2 Stories per day, and links to an Instagram post by Mosseri on this. For comparison: accounts with up to 10,000 followers post an average of 3 Stories per week, according to Later.

Social media at the dealership: is it worth it for a used-car dealer?

We don't have a study specifically about car dealerships. However, Buffer's cross-industry data shows: those who post 3 to 5 times instead of 1 to 2 times per week reach about 12% more people per post and gain followers more than twice as fast. Whether this translates into inquiries and sales should be checked monthly using your Insights and the messages about specific vehicles.
