Instagram for Car Dealers: How to Do It in 2026 in 7 Steps
Instagram for car dealers 2026: business account, one reel under 3 minutes per vehicle so Instagram recommends it to non-followers too, plus stories and FAQs.

This is how you use Instagram as a car dealer in 2026: set up a business account, fill in the profile with contact and legal-notice (Impressum) details, publish a reel under 3 minutes per vehicle, show new arrivals in stories, pre-sort direct messages with automatic FAQ answers, and keep to a fixed rhythm. For the ongoing work we recommend A21 Social: the service automatically creates short videos from your listings and publishes them, from €29 per month plus VAT. Transparency note: the publisher of this guide is A21 Social.

What do you need before you start with Instagram?
You need a smartphone with the Instagram app, your company details for the legal notice, complete vehicle data from your listings, and a fixed person responsible within the business. If you gather this in advance, you won't need to add anything later.
You should clarify and prepare the following in advance:
- Your company details per § 5 (1) DDG: name and address, for legal entities the legal form and authorized representatives, an email address, if applicable the supervisory authority, and the register and registration number.
- The consumption data of your new cars, i.e. energy consumption, CO2 emissions and CO2 class per § 5 Pkw-EnVKV.
- Good photos and complete vehicle descriptions from your listings on mobile.de or AutoScout24. For how to prepare your listings for this, read mobile.de quality check: How dealers reach 100%.
- Optionally, the login details for your Facebook page, if you want to connect both accounts.
- A fixed point of contact who publishes posts and answers messages, or a service that handles publishing for you.
Instagram's strength is its reach. According to the ARD/ZDF Media Study 2026, 40% of the German-speaking population aged 14 and over use Instagram at least once a week, Facebook reaches 28%, TikTok 18%. 2,462 people were surveyed between January 27 and April 19, 2026.
Instagram is thus extending its lead over Facebook to 12 percentage points. However, Media Perspektiven also notes that in 2026 no provider was able to increase its weekly reach. Any additional reach for your dealership must therefore be earned through your content.
Instagram for car dealers: Step-by-step getting started
Getting started works in 7 steps: switch your account, complete your profile, publish reels per vehicle, add mandatory information, save stories, set up chat FAQs, and establish a rhythm. You do the first 2 steps once; the rest become a fixed routine.
1. Set up a business account in the Instagram app
Open your profile, tap "More", then under "For professionals" tap "Account type and tools" and then "Switch to professional account". Choose a category, then "Business", and enter your dealership's contact details. This is how the Instagram Help Center describes it. You can connect an existing Facebook page via "Login to Facebook". According to Search Engine Journal, you also need the professional account to schedule posts in advance within the app.
2. Complete your profile with contact and legal-notice details
Under "Edit profile" you decide which business details, such as address, phone number and email address, are visible on your profile. For digital services offered commercially, § 5 DDG requires information that must be “easily recognizable and directly accessible” and must be kept permanently available. How you implement this in your Instagram profile should be clarified with your legal counsel. This guide only reproduces the legal text and does not replace legal advice.
3. Publish a reel under 3 minutes for each vehicle
Show every vehicle in your stock in its own reel in portrait format: exterior view, interior, equipment, and your contact options. Instagram allows recordings of up to 20 minutes, but does not suggest reels over 3 minutes to new viewers. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri wrote on January 18, 2025 that reels of up to 3 minutes can appear in recommendation areas such as Explore and the Reels tab. Staying under 3 minutes means your vehicle also reaches people who don't yet follow you.
4. Include mandatory information per Pkw-EnVKV in every ad for new cars
For new cars, § 5 Pkw-EnVKV requires, for advertising on the internet, explicitly “including advertising on social media and online video platforms”, information on energy consumption, CO2 emissions and CO2 class. Per § 2, a car is presumed to be new if its first registration occurred no more than 8 months ago or it has been driven no more than 1,000 km. This obligation can therefore also apply to day registrations and young demo cars in your reels. Check first registration and mileage before every post and have your text template for this information reviewed legally.
5. Show new arrivals in stories and save them as highlights
Use stories for new arrivals, handovers, and glimpses into reconditioning. According to Instagram, stories disappear after 24 hours from the profile, feed and messages, unless you add them to your profile as story highlights. So set up fixed highlights, such as "New in Stock", "Handovers", "Financing" and "Directions".
6. Set up automatic FAQ answers for direct messages
In chat you can set up up to 4 frequently asked questions that prospects can select with a tap, each optionally with an automatic answer. This is set up via Messages, more actions, Tools and "Frequently asked questions": activate "Show Questions" and add questions via "Add Question". For car dealers, suitable questions include "Is the vehicle still available?", "Can I schedule a test drive?", "Do you accept trade-ins?" and "Do you offer financing?".
7. Schedule reels in advance and keep to a fixed rhythm
Plan your reels a week ahead. According to Search Engine Journal, posts and reels can be scheduled with a professional account up to 75 days in advance and up to 25 per day, and later rescheduled, shared immediately, or deleted. We did not find a Meta help page confirming these figures. For how often you should post, see our post Instagram: How often should car dealers post? The weekly plan.
How long does Instagram for car dealers take and what does it cost?
Account, profile, highlights and chat FAQs are set up once. After that, Instagram mainly costs working time for one reel per vehicle. If you outsource this work, with A21 Social you pay, depending on the plan, €29, €79 or €149 per month plus VAT (as of October 2026).
The easiest way to calculate your time requirement yourself: new arrivals per week multiplied by your time spent per reel for filming, editing, text and mandatory information. On top of that come stories and answering messages. We did not find a reliable industry figure for the time required.
| Option | Who creates the video? | Where is it published? | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yourself, in the Instagram app | You or an employee film and edit | Instagram, other platforms separately | Your working time |
| A21 Social Starter | AI from listing photos and vehicle data | Automatically on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube | €29 plus VAT |
| A21 Social Pro | AI from listing photos and vehicle data | Automatically on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube | €79 plus VAT |
| A21 Social Enterprise | AI from listing photos and vehicle data | Automatically on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube | €149 plus VAT |
Paid Instagram advertising may come on top. Since we did not find a reliable source for advertising prices, it is not included in this overview. For a more comprehensive comparison of various tools, see AI for car dealerships: 9 tools for car dealers compared 2026.
Who should handle Instagram at the dealership?
Instagram is suitable for dealerships and used-car dealers who regularly bring in vehicles and want to reach buyers in their region. It should be the responsibility of a fixed person, or a service that publishes the videos without your involvement.
Younger people in particular use multiple platforms in parallel. 91% of 14- to 29-year-olds are active on social media at least once a week. According to Media Perspektiven, people aged 14 and over use an average of 5 video, audio and social media platforms per week, and 14- to 29-year-olds use more than 8.
If you want a presence on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, someone has to film a video for every new vehicle and publish it on all platforms. If no one is firmly responsible for this, your Instagram profile lies dormant while the vehicles keep accumulating days on the lot.
Our recommendation: A21 Social for ongoing work
A21 Social uses AI to create short portrait-format videos from your vehicle listings, based on listing photos and vehicle data. The videos appear automatically on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. Filming and editing are eliminated, and you don't need an agency for it.
If a video is on your YouTube channel, you can link it in the mobile.de listing. For exactly how this works, see Uploading a mobile.de video: How it works for car dealers.
Here's how to divide the work:
- Choose a plan on the pricing page: Starter for €29, Pro for €79, or Enterprise for €149 per month, each plus VAT.
- Have A21 Social create and publish a video for every vehicle from your listings.
- For every video of a new car, check whether the mandatory information per Pkw-EnVKV is in the description.
- Keep stories, highlights and direct messages in your own hands, since that's where personal conversations with buyers happen.
What mistakes should car dealers avoid on Instagram?
Typical mistakes are reels that are too long, missing mandatory information for young vehicles, an incomplete profile, lost stories, and unanswered messages. Each of these costs reach or inquiries, and each can be avoided with the steps described above.
| Mistake | Consequence | Remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Reel longer than 3 minutes | According to Instagram, not recommended to new viewers | Keep vehicle reels under 3 minutes |
| Demo car without consumption and CO2 data | Information may be mandatory per Pkw-EnVKV | Check first registration and mileage before every post |
| Profile without company details | Information per § 5 DDG not easily recognizable | Complete the profile, clarify implementation legally |
| Stories without highlights | Content is gone after 24 hours | Save important stories as highlights |
| Chat without FAQs | The same questions have to be answered individually again and again | Set up up to 4 FAQs with automatic answers |
| Posting only when there's time | Profile appears abandoned, vehicles are missing | Schedule reels in advance or have them published automatically |
Example: A dealership in Kassel shows a demo car in a reel that was only registered a few months ago and has very few kilometers on the odometer. The salesperson treats it like a used car and leaves out consumption and CO2 class. Under the presumption rule in § 2 Pkw-EnVKV, however, this car may count as new, in which case the mandatory information would also be required in the Instagram post.
Example: A used-car dealer in Leipzig makes a detailed, 6-minute-long video for a station wagon. His followers see it, but Instagram does not recommend it to any new audience. Cut down to under 3 minutes, the reel could have appeared in Explore and the Reels tab.
How do you recognize that Instagram is working for your dealership?
You recognize it by growing reach among non-followers, more direct messages about specific vehicles, and buyers naming Instagram as their first point of contact. Measure this in the statistics of your professional Instagram account, first after the first full month and then monthly.
| Metric | Where to find it | When to check |
|---|---|---|
| Reach of reels among non-followers | Statistics of the individual reel | After the first full month, then monthly |
| Profile views and clicks on contact details | Statistics of the professional account | Monthly |
| Direct messages about individual vehicles | Instagram inbox, questions from the FAQs | Count weekly, evaluate monthly |
| Sales with first contact via Instagram | Your own sales list, ask customers at closing | After a quarter |
| Days on the lot for the vehicles shown | Your inventory system, mobile.de or AutoScout24 | After a quarter |
If you have published both reels under 3 minutes and longer videos, compare the two. The reach among non-followers will show you whether the recommendation rule from the help center applies to your vehicles.
Ultimately, what matters for your business is time on the lot. For how to specifically reduce days on the lot, see Reducing days on the lot: 7 steps for used-car dealers.
How we reviewed this guide
In October 2026 we evaluated Meta's Instagram help pages, Adam Mosseri's Threads post, and the legal texts of the Pkw-EnVKV and the DDG on gesetze-im-internet.de. In addition, we drew on the analyses of the ARD/ZDF Media Study 2026 by Media Perspektiven and onlinemarketing.de, as well as a trade article from Search Engine Journal. We reproduce menu names as they appear in the English-language help center. We were unable to verify a Meta help page regarding scheduling up to 75 days in advance, nor a reliable figure on how many car buyers actually use Instagram. We therefore do not treat either as an established fact. Every figure in this post is linked to its source.
If you don't want to film the reels for your inventory yourself, try our recommendation, A21 Social. Plans start at €29 per month plus VAT.
Frequently asked questions
What Instagram reel ideas work for a car dealership?
The most obvious approach is a dedicated reel for every vehicle in stock, showing the exterior, interior and special features. This pairs well with customer handovers, the "new arrival of the week", and glimpses into reconditioning or the workshop. More ideas that don't require a camera crew are collected in our post [Dealership reels: 14 video ideas without a camera crew](/blog/autohaus-reels-ideen-ohne-kamerateam).
How do I film a vehicle presentation as a reel with my phone?
Film in portrait format and walk around the vehicle once with steady movements. Then film the interior and the details that buyers care about. Keep the finished reel under 3 minutes, because according to the [Instagram Help Center](https://www.facebook.com/help/instagram/2720958398006062), longer reels are not recommended to new viewers. If you don't want to film at all, A21 Social creates the videos using AI from your listing photos and vehicle data.
Which hashtags should car dealers use on Instagram?
Use a few hashtags that match the vehicle and your region, for example brand, model, vehicle type and your city. We did not find a reliable source that recommends a specific number or specific hashtags. So check in your Instagram statistics which posts reach non-followers, and adjust your selection accordingly.
Is Instagram advertising worthwhile for used-car dealers?
That depends on your inventory and your region. We did not find a reliable source on advertising prices and results. Reach is not lacking: according to the [ARD/ZDF Media Study 2026](https://onlinemarketing.de/cases/ard-zdf-medienstudie-2026-mediennutzung-deutschland), 40% of the German-speaking population aged 14 and over use Instagram weekly. Test advertising with a fixed budget for individual vehicles and compare inquiries and sales against those of your unpaid reels.
Do I have to state the car's price in Instagram posts?
We cannot make a statement on this, because the sources for this guide do not address price disclosure. What is established is that advertising for new cars on social media requires, per [§ 5 Pkw-EnVKV](https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/pkw-envkv/__5.html), information on energy consumption, CO2 emissions and CO2 class. Whether and how you must state prices in Instagram posts should be clarified with your legal counsel.
How often should a dealership post on Instagram?
A simple benchmark is one reel for every vehicle that newly enters your stock, supplemented by stories. Choose a rhythm you can sustain over weeks, even if that means fewer posts. You'll find a concrete weekly plan in our post [Instagram: How often should car dealers post? The weekly plan](/blog/instagram-wie-oft-posten-unternehmen).
