TikTok for car dealerships works when you switch to a free Business Account, post the same short set of videos for every car on your lot, and add TikTok's Automotive Inventory Ads once your inventory feed and pixel are ready. If you want to keep posting without filming, we recommend A21 Social, which turns your listings into vertical videos and posts them to TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, with plans from $49 a month. A21 Social publishes this guide.

Step What to do Cost
Account Switch your dealership profile to a TikTok Business Account Free
Every car Post a walkaround, an owner-view clip, a "what I wish I knew" review and a pros-and-cons breakdown Staff time, or A21 Social from $49 a month
Local reach Keep the account public and posts set to Everyone so the Local Feed can show them Free
Pricing Show the total price with all mandatory fees, or show no price Free
Paid ads Build an Automotive Ads catalog, set up pixel events, run a Lead generation campaign The ad budget you set

What you need before you start

To post organically, you need a phone, a public TikTok profile for the store, listing photos and details for each car, and pricing that meets the FTC's total-price standard. For paid Inventory Ads, you also need Admin-level access to TikTok Business Center, an inventory feed and a pixel on your website.

TikTok says its new US joint venture lets more than 200 million Americans and 7.5 million businesses keep using TikTok. It also cites GWI data showing 37% of TikTok users are in the market for new or used vehicles (Q3 2023 to Q2 2024).

Get these in place first:

  • Organic posts: a Business Account, one person who owns posting, and current photos and specs for every car.
  • Inventory Ads: Admin-level access to TikTok Business Center, an inventory feed, and a pixel that tracks visits to your vehicle detail pages.
  • Compliance: a pricing policy that includes all mandatory fees, and a disclosure rule for staff who appear in videos.

TikTok in the US is now run by TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, with Silver Lake, Oracle and MGX each holding 15 percent and ByteDance keeping 19.9 percent. The venture says it will retrain the recommendation algorithm on US user data, so the reach you saw in past years may change.

How to use TikTok for car dealerships: step by step

Set up a free Business Account, film the same set of clips for every car, keep posts public and priced correctly, then connect your inventory to Automotive Ads. Steps 1 to 5 cost nothing but time. Steps 6 to 9 are the paid ads path.

1. Switch your dealership account to a free Business Account

In the TikTok app, go to Profile, then "Settings and privacy," then "Manage account," then "Switch to Business Account", and pick a business category. You then get analytics on audience demographics, account growth and content performance. Put the dealership name and city in the profile so local shoppers can tell who you are.

2. Shoot the same short set of videos for every car

CBT News, citing TikTok research, reports that the content that works best is vehicle walkarounds, owner perspectives, "what I wish I knew" reviews and pros-and-cons breakdowns. Turn those 4 formats into a fixed shot list so any salesperson can film a car the same way. For more clip formats, see our 12 car dealership video ideas you can shoot on a phone.

3. Keep posts public so the Local Feed can show them nearby

TikTok's Local Feed is a home-screen tab "Introduced gradually across the U.S." starting February 11, 2026. It picks posts based on location, topic and when they were posted. Posts from private accounts or accounts under 18 don't appear there, and neither do posts set to Friends or Only You. Set every post to Everyone, and say your town and store name in the video and the caption.

4. Show the total price on screen, or leave the price out

On March 13, 2026, the FTC sent warning letters to 97 auto dealership groups saying advertised prices must be the total price, including all mandatory fees. The FTC also flagged rebates not available to all buyers, prices that require dealer financing, and advertising vehicles that are unavailable or don't exist. Treat any price in a video or caption as an advertised price, and run your pricing policy past your compliance counsel.

5. Have staff say who they work for inside the video

The FTC's endorsement guidance says employees promoting their company on social media "should disclose your relationship to the company", and that listing your employer on your profile page isn't enough. For video, the FTC says a disclosure only in the text description is "very unlikely to be clear and conspicuous." A spoken line plus on-screen text, such as "I'm Mike, I sell cars at Smith Ford," puts the disclosure in the video itself.

6. Build an Automotive Ads catalog from your inventory feed

Automotive Inventory Ads are TikTok ads built from your inventory catalog that show individual VINs to shoppers based on their in-market activity and preferences. In TikTok Business Center, set the catalog industry to "Auto - Inventory". Then add vehicles by data feed (TikTok's recommended method, with scheduled refresh), by CSV upload or by hand. For a CSV, TikTok says "Make sure that it follows our template or it will be rejected," and its business blog says its feed requirements are "identical" to other platforms.

7. Set up your pixel events before you spend

For best performance, TikTok recommends "at least three properly set-up Web Lead Gen events, with View Content as a definite must". Pass parameters such as content_id, make and model, which TikTok says help inform its models of user preferences and can also lift performance. Ask your website provider to fire these events on vehicle detail pages and lead forms.

8. Launch a Lead generation campaign that uses the catalog

In TikTok Ads Manager, choose the "Lead generation" objective, turn on "Use catalog," and pick your catalog, pixel and optimization event. Send traffic to your own vehicle pages or to TikTok's Vehicle Inventory Page. Inventory card images use a 4:3 ratio, with 800x600 preferred.

9. Check whether a special ad category limits your targeting

TikTok's Special Ad Categories apply to advertisers "offering housing, employment, or credit opportunities to users in the United States or Canada," and under them "Zip code targeting not allowed." TikTok's campaign guide says targeting may be limited if a special ad category applies, and that your inventory locations decide which countries you can target. If your ads mention financing, plan your geography without ZIP codes.

As of October 2026, here is the record on Automotive Inventory Ads. CBT News reported on April 28, 2025 that TikTok had rolled them out after more than a year of beta testing with dealer partners. TikTok formally introduced Automotive Ads on its business blog on June 3, 2025, with Inventory Ads for dealers and Model Ads for OEMs. Its help pages, last updated in July 2025 and November 2025, don't say which countries can use Automotive Ads.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

Organic TikTok is free apart from staff time. Inventory Ads cost whatever budget you set in Ads Manager, because the TikTok pages we read don't publish a fixed price. A21 Social plans start at $49 a month if you'd rather not film at all.

Item Cost (checked October 22, 2026) What it takes
TikTok Business Account Free One switch in the app settings
Organic posting by your staff Free on TikTok Filming, editing, captions and posting for every car
Automotive Inventory Ads The budget you set in Ads Manager Feed, pixel events, catalog and campaign setup
A21 Social Starter $49 a month plus applicable sales tax Connect listings; videos are made and posted automatically
A21 Social Pro $129 a month plus applicable sales tax Same workflow, higher plan
A21 Social Enterprise $199 a month plus applicable sales tax Same workflow, top plan

TikTok reports that Inventory Ads delivered 41% lower cost per acquisition and 51% lower last-click CPA in US performance data from October 2024 to January 2025. That is TikTok's own aggregate figure. Your CPA will depend on your market, your inventory and how clean your feed and pixel data are.

Most of the time goes into the organic side. Every car on the lot needs its own clips, and that work repeats each time inventory turns. Ads take mostly upfront work: once the feed refreshes on a schedule, the catalog updates itself.

Who should do this?

Any dealer whose inventory turns regularly, and who has someone to keep posting, should be on TikTok. Inventory Ads suit dealers and marketplaces with a clean VIN feed, because TikTok built Inventory Ads for individual VINs and Model Ads for OEMs.

Dealer type Start with Add next
Independent lot Organic clips for every car, posted from a public Business Account Inventory Ads once your feed and pixel are set up
Franchise store Organic clips plus Inventory Ads on new and used VINs Coordinate messaging with your OEM, which uses Model Ads
Dealer group One Business Center with admin access controlled centrally A catalog and campaign for each rooftop's inventory

The hard part is keeping it going. A shot list only helps if somebody films every new car, writes the caption, checks the price and posts it, week after week. Give that job to one named person (a salesperson, your BDC or your marketing manager) and judge them on consistency. Our car dealership social media strategy guide covers how to set that rhythm.

If nobody on your team has time to film, A21 Social is our top pick for doing it without a camera. It uses AI to turn your listing photos and details into short vertical videos and posts them automatically to TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, so nobody films or edits and you don't need an agency. To start, connect your listings and choose a plan. You can compare it with other options in our roundup of AI video tools for car dealerships.

Example: a 60-car independent lot connects its listings to A21 Social, so every new car gets a TikTok video without anyone filming. The sales manager still shoots one walkaround on a phone for the cars that get the most questions, with the spoken disclosure from step 5.

Common mistakes

The common TikTok mistakes for dealers involve pricing, privacy settings and ad tracking, and you can fix each one before your next post. Each fix below comes with the rule behind it.

Mistake Why it hurts Fix
Showing a price without mandatory fees The FTC told 97 dealership groups advertised prices must be the total price Show the full price or no price
Leaving sold cars up in videos or ads The FTC flagged advertising vehicles that are unavailable or don't exist Refresh your feed on a schedule and archive sold-car posts
Putting the staff disclosure only in the caption The FTC says a text-description disclosure is very unlikely to be clear and conspicuous Say it out loud and put it on screen
Setting posts to Friends or keeping the account private Those posts don't appear in the Local Feed Keep the account public and posts set to Everyone
Uploading a CSV in your own format TikTok says "Make sure that it follows our template or it will be rejected" Use TikTok's template, or a scheduled data feed
Running ads without View Content tracking TikTok calls View Content "a definite must" Fire at least 3 lead gen events with VIN parameters
Planning ZIP-code targeting for finance offers "Zip code targeting not allowed" under special ad categories Plan your geography another way

Two habits also cost you views. Captions that skip the year, make, model and town give the Local Feed less topic signal, and our 16 caption templates for dealerships work on TikTok too. Posting in bursts and then going quiet throws away the Local Feed's preference for recent posts.

How to check it worked

Check TikTok's Business Account analytics for views and audience, TikTok Ads Manager for leads and cost per lead, and your CRM for leads tagged as coming from TikTok. Review them after a full month of steady posting, then compare each month with the one before.

What to measure Where When
Views and engagement on each car video TikTok Business Account analytics, content performance After a full month of posting
Who is watching and where they are TikTok Business Account analytics, audience demographics Monthly, to see if your audience matches your market area
Follower growth TikTok Business Account analytics, account growth Monthly
View Content and lead events firing TikTok Ads Manager and pixel event reports Before launch and after the first week of spend
Leads and cost per acquisition TikTok Ads Manager campaign reports Monthly, against your other lead sources
Showroom visits and sales from TikTok Your CRM lead source field Monthly, matched to the cars you posted

If the audience in your demographics doesn't match your market area, check your privacy settings, your captions and your ad geography first. Our weekly plan to sell more used cars shows where TikTok and other social posts fit alongside your listings.

How we checked this guide

In October 2026, we read TikTok's own help center pages, its for-business blog and newsroom posts, two CBT News articles, and the FTC's March 2026 press release and endorsement guidance. We couldn't find an official TikTok page that gives a posting frequency, so this guide gives none. TikTok's help pages don't list which countries can use Automotive Ads. We also couldn't source a figure on dealer-reported out-of-market views, because Automotive News and Digital Dealer blocked access. Every figure in this guide links to its source.

If you want a TikTok video for every car on your lot without filming or editing, try A21 Social. Plans start at $49 a month on the A21 Social pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Is TikTok good for car dealerships?

CBT News reported on February 10, 2026 that TikTok's research found 80% of users say TikTok helps them build confidence and knowledge when buying a vehicle, and 51% build their shortlist from research on the platform. TikTok also cites GWI data that 37% of its users are in the market for new or used vehicles. Whether it works for your store depends on posting every car consistently and keeping your pricing compliant.

How often should a car dealership post on TikTok?

We couldn't find a recommended posting frequency on any official TikTok page we could open, so treat the posting counts repeated online with care. TikTok does say its Local Feed ranks posts partly by when they were posted, so new posts count. Pick a cadence you can keep every week, such as one set of clips per new car, instead of posting in a burst and then going quiet.

Why are my dealership TikTok views not local?

Dealers often say their views come from far outside their market, but we couldn't find a sourced figure on how often that happens. TikTok's Local Feed, which shows posts based on location, topic and posting time, has only been rolling out gradually across the US since February 11, 2026, and precise GPS sharing is off by default. Keep your account public, name your town in the video and caption, and use Automotive Inventory Ads if you need location targeting.

Can you upload your car inventory feed to TikTok?

Yes. You can upload inventory to an Automotive Ads catalog in TikTok Business Center, and TikTok says the feed requirements are identical to other platforms. TikTok recommends a scheduled data feed, rejects CSV uploads that don't follow its template, and also lets you add vehicles by hand. You need Admin-level access to Business Center to build the catalog.

Should car salesmen have their own TikTok?

The sources for this guide don't measure whether salesperson accounts sell more cars than a store account. If your salespeople post about your inventory, the FTC's endorsement guidance says employees promoting their company should disclose that relationship. Write a policy for staff accounts before anyone starts posting so everyone discloses the same way.

Do car salesmen have to disclose they work at the dealership on TikTok?

The FTC's endorsement guidance says employees promoting their company on social media should disclose their relationship to the company, and that listing your employer on your profile page isn't enough. For video, the FTC says a disclosure only in the text description is very unlikely to be clear and conspicuous. Ask your compliance counsel how this applies to your team.

Can you post car prices on TikTok under FTC rules?

On March 13, 2026, the FTC warned 97 auto dealership groups that the prices they advertise must be the total price consumers will pay, including all mandatory fees. The FTC also flagged rebates not available to all buyers, prices that require dealer financing, and advertising vehicles that are unavailable or don't exist. Check with your compliance counsel before you put a price on screen or in a caption.

TikTok vs Facebook Marketplace for selling cars: which is better?

The sources for this guide don't compare the two platforms directly. TikTok's Ahmed Iqbal told CBT News that about 56% of people come to TikTok to watch reviews and discover new vehicles, which makes it a discovery channel for your inventory. For current Marketplace rules for dealers, read A21 Social's guide to Facebook Marketplace car dealer rules.
