AI in car dealerships means software that prepares listings, social media posts, price suggestions, and answers to customer inquiries. Checking, advising, and deciding must still be done by your staff. For vehicle videos on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, we recommend A21 Social, starting at €29 per month plus VAT. Note: This guide is published by A21 Social.

Area What AI handles today What stays with you
Listings on mobile.de and AutoScout24 Quality check, draft texts, image sorting, price evaluation Checking every detail before the listing goes online
Social Media Post texts and short vehicle videos from listing data Correct listing data, responding to comments
Customer inquiries and appointments Bots for appointment booking and first responses Consultation, test drive, closing the deal, AI disclosure in the bot
Pricing Market comparison, days-on-lot forecast The decision on the price

What is AI in the car dealership?

AI in the car dealership refers to programs that generate suggestions from your vehicle and customer data, such as texts, image sequences, price evaluations, or responses. According to the AUTOHAUS panel from August 2026, 52 percent of car dealerships use such tools.

Artificial intelligence (AI) here refers to software that recognizes patterns in large amounts of data and derives new content or evaluations from them. A language model like ChatGPT, for example, writes a description text from an equipment list. A pricing model compares your vehicle with similar offers on the market.

A year earlier, the share was still 37 percent. How intensively dealerships use AI varies greatly: 4 percent use it comprehensively, 17 percent use it in a structured way in individual areas, and 31 percent use it where quick, visible effects are promised.

Among the tools, standard solutions lead the way. 57 percent use programs like ChatGPT or Copilot, 54 percent use solutions from specialized providers in the automotive sector. According to the panel, offerings from manufacturers and importers play almost no role. You can find a comparison of individual providers in our article AI for car dealerships: 9 tools for dealers compared in 2026.

How does AI work in daily dealer operations?

In car dealerships, AI usually works as an assistant within programs you already use: You enter vehicle data or an inquiry, the AI delivers a draft, and an employee approves it. According to the panel, it is used most frequently in marketing and customer communication.

Field of application Share of dealerships (Panel August 2026) Typical example
Marketing and social media 59 percent Post texts, short vehicle videos
Lead generation and customer communication 52 percent First responses, appointment booking
Vehicle valuation and pricing 40 percent Price suggestion based on market data
Service and workshop reception 39 percent Scheduling appointments for the workshop

Listings: mobile.de and AutoScout24 help check

The two major vehicle marketplaces have integrated AI directly into the listing process. The quality check and SmartInserieren (Smart Listing) are free for dealers.

Tool Available since Cost Function
mobile.de AI quality check since February 2, 2026 free Rates each listing with a score of up to 100 percent
AutoScout24 SmartInserieren since June 10, 2026 free in all dealer service packages in Germany Quality check before publication, AI descriptions in short or detailed form, image sorting, image optimization, price evaluation
AutoScout24 HändlerIQ (Dealer IQ) in the dealer dashboard announcement from October 7, 2025 free for all AutoScout24 partners, included in the service package Price evaluation, listing quality, equipment analysis, days-on-lot forecast, competitive analysis

In the mobile.de quality check, image quality accounts for 40 percent of the score, vehicle attributes for 30 percent, the number of images for 20 percent, and the length of the description for 10 percent. According to mobile.de CSO Florian Baur, listings with a high score have "a better chance of being placed more visibly in search results." You can read how to improve your score step by step in mobile.de quality check: How dealers reach 100%.

AutoScout24 justifies SmartInserieren with its own data: high-quality listings reportedly achieve up to 4 times more inquiries than low-quality listings. This figure comes from the provider itself and was not independently verified.

Customer inquiries: Bots for appointments

A chatbot is a program that automatically answers written inquiries, for example on the website or via messenger. According to TÜV NORD INSIGHT 2026, 63 percent of dealers already use bots for scheduling appointments.

Social media: Videos from listing data

On social media, AI creates text and video content from data that is already in your listings anyway. A21 Social, for example, turns listing photos and vehicle details into short vertical-format videos.

For which dealers does AI pay off?

AI pays off for car dealerships and used car dealers who list vehicles regularly and answer customer inquiries in writing. If you're unsure about costs, the best way to start is with the free listing features from mobile.de and AutoScout24.

For some dealerships, AI already pays off today according to the panel. For 41 percent of the dealerships surveyed, the benefit already exceeds the cost, and 29 percent describe the ratio as "clearly positive." Only 9 percent see costs outweighing benefits.

Dealerships cite other hurdles more often than cost: result quality (45 percent), integration into existing systems (43 percent), and data protection and compliance (41 percent). Since result quality ranks highest, someone at your dealership should check every AI result before it goes out to the public.

Dealer type Sensible entry point What to watch out for
Small used car dealer Quality check at mobile.de, SmartInserieren at AutoScout24 Proofread every AI description yourself
Car dealership with its own sales team Additionally, a bot for appointment inquiries The bot must identify itself as AI
Dealership group with multiple locations Additionally, written AI rules and training Define responsibilities for each location

What does AI change for your sales process?

AI is changing how buyers inform themselves and how quickly you need to respond: 13 percent of customers used an AI assistant like ChatGPT during their last car purchase, and 48 percent can probably or definitely imagine doing so for their next purchase. However, according to TÜV NORD INSIGHT 2026, buyers still choose their vehicle mainly through personal contact.

For the study, more than 800 car buyers and more than 250 car dealers were surveyed. Among other things, buyers stated:

What buyers say (TÜV NORD INSIGHT 2026) Share
Had phone contact with their dealership 90 percent
Would like bots 48 percent
Would prefer WhatsApp in the future (figure from a trend survey by LDB) 30 percent
Can imagine buying a car completely digitally up to 30 percent
Are skeptical about digital car buying nearly 60 percent

When it comes to bots, there's a wide gap between demand and supply: 48 percent of customers want bots, but only 21 percent of dealers plan to introduce them. Steven Zielke (mobilApp) estimates the cost of an appointment booking handled by staff at around 4 to 8 euros, versus 1 to 2 euros with an AI bot.

Dealers themselves are also cautious: more than 50 percent of dealers are skeptical about digital car buying, and almost half of the customers surveyed name the dealership visit as their most important touchpoint. AI can speed up many things leading up to the appointment, but you still lead the sales conversation.

What still has to be done by a human

Four tasks still remain with humans, even with AI, because the law or the buyers require it. The following points reflect statements from the sources and do not replace legal advice.

Task Why a human? Basis
Checking listing details Errors in AI texts remain the dealer's statements § 434 (3) sentence 1 no. 2 BGB (German Civil Code)
Consultation and test drive Buyers choose the vehicle through personal contact TÜV NORD INSIGHT 2026
Identifying the chatbot as AI Transparency obligation since August 2, 2026 Art. 50 AI Act
Training staff Obligation for AI competence since February 2, 2025 Art. 4 AI Act

On liability: According to § 434 (3) sentence 1 no. 2 BGB, goods only meet the objective requirements if they have the characteristics that the buyer can expect, taking into account "the public statements made by the seller... particularly in advertising or on the label." A faulty statement in an AI-generated listing description therefore remains a statement by the dealer.

An example: A used car dealer has a station wagon's description generated by AI. The text mentions a tow bar that the vehicle does not have. Because the seller checks the text against the data sheet before approving it, the error is caught and he removes the sentence.

On disclosure: Since August 2, 2026, the transparency obligations under Art. 50 of the AI Act apply, meaning chatbots must identify themselves as AI. According to Art. 50 (5), the information must be provided "at the latest at the time of the first interaction." According to paragraph 1, this is not required if it is "obvious" from the context that AI is involved. Violations of the transparency obligations can result in fines of up to 15 million euros or 3 percent of global annual turnover.

On training: Art. 4 of the AI Act has applied since February 2, 2025. According to Noerr, the obligation is relevant for both liability and employment law. The Digital Omnibus did not postpone Art. 4. According to Haufe, the obligation applies “already when an employee uses a language model for research”.

How do you implement AI at your lot?

Start with the free AI features from mobile.de and AutoScout24, and set down in writing who approves AI results. The following steps can still be implemented this week.

  1. Check your inventory using the mobile.de quality check. Sort your listings by score, ascending, and improve the images first, since image quality makes up 40 percent of the score.
  2. Use SmartInserieren at AutoScout24 for your next new arrivals. Have the description generated, adjust it to your style, and compare every equipment detail against the data sheet.
  3. Write your approval rules on a single page. Record who checks listing texts, which tools are allowed, and what data may be entered into which tool. So far, only 42 percent of dealerships have formal guidelines.
  4. Test your bot with your own inquiry. Check whether it identifies itself as AI in the first response, as required by Art. 50 (1) and (5) of the AI Act.
  5. Talk with your team about using AI and document the discussion. Clarify where AI makes mistakes and who approves results, and note the participants.
  6. Hand social media over to a tool. Have A21 Social create short videos for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube from your listings.

Who handles social media at the car dealership?

Social media at a car dealership is handled either by someone on the team or by a tool that creates posts from your listings. According to the panel, marketing and social media, at 59 percent, is the most common field of AI application. So clarify who creates the posts and how regularly they appear.

We recommend A21 Social for this task. A21 Social uses AI to turn the photos and details from your listings into short vertical-format videos and publishes them automatically on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. There's no filming or editing involved, and you don't need an agency for it.

Each video can additionally appear on your YouTube channel. From there, you link it in the mobile.de listing. You can see how this works in Uploading a video to mobile.de: How it's done for car dealers.

Your job is the same as with every AI tool: the listing data has to be correct, since the videos are created from it. Every new vehicle in your inventory provides material for a new video. The monthly packages cost €29 (Starter), €79 (Pro), and €149 (Enterprise), each plus VAT; details can be found on the pricing page.

Which mistakes should you avoid with AI?

Typical mistakes are unchecked AI texts, bots without an AI disclosure, and missing rules within the team. Each of these can be fixed with little effort.

Mistake Why it causes harm Better approach
Publishing an AI description unchecked A false statement remains the dealer's statement under § 434 BGB Before every approval, cross-check equipment, first registration, and mileage against the vehicle documents
Operating a chatbot without an AI disclosure Transparency obligations have applied since August 2, 2026; violations can result in fines of up to 15 million euros or 3 percent of global annual turnover Include the AI disclosure in the bot's first message
Using AI without rules and clear responsibilities According to Haufe, the obligation for AI competence already applies even to a simple research task using a language model, yet more than half of dealerships lack written rules, approval processes, or clear responsibilities A one-page set of rules and a named person responsible
Only uploading additional photos in the mobile.de quality check The number of images only makes up 20 percent of the score, while image quality makes up 40 percent Replace blurry or dark photos and fully fill out the vehicle attributes

What should you do next?

Check your listing inventory this week using the marketplaces' free AI tools, and write down your approval rules. The next step is automating social media.

We did not find solid figures on how much AI descriptions reduce days on the lot. So measure it yourself: note the days on the lot for your vehicles before and after making the switch. You can find more approaches in Reducing days on the lot: 7 steps for used car dealers.

Also keep an eye on deadlines. For the machine-readable labeling required under Art. 50 (2) of the AI Act, the Digital Omnibus has postponed the deadline to December 2, 2026.

How did we verify this guide?

For this guide, we evaluated the following sources in October 2026: specialist reports from AUTOHAUS on the August 2026 panel and on the TÜV NORD INSIGHT 2026 study, the TÜV NORD study page, a report from LDB, press releases from AutoScout24, the legal text of § 434 BGB and Art. 50 of the AI Act, as well as specialist articles from Noerr, Haufe, and Dreyfield. We were unable to access the mobile.de press section, so figures on time savings and the effect of AI descriptions on days on the lot are missing here. The exact sample size of the AUTOHAUS panel was not specified. We did not find a source on price labeling regulations related to AI. Every figure in this guide is directly linked to its source.

If you'd like to try vehicle videos without filming or editing, test A21 Social. Packages starting at €29 per month plus VAT can be found on the A21 Social pricing page.

Is an AI chatbot worth it for WhatsApp customer inquiries at a car dealership?

The study figures speak in favor of it, as long as the bot identifies itself as AI. According to a trend survey by LDB, 30 percent of customers would prefer WhatsApp in the future. According to TÜV NORD INSIGHT 2026, 48 percent of customers want bots, while only 21 percent of dealers plan to introduce them. Steven Zielke (mobilApp) estimates the cost of an appointment booking handled by staff at around 4 to 8 euros, versus 1 to 2 euros with an AI bot. Since August 2, 2026, a chatbot must identify itself as AI under Art. 50 of the AI Act.

Does a chatbot have to be labeled as AI?

Yes, the transparency obligations under Art. 50 of the AI Act have applied since August 2, 2026. AI systems that interact directly with people must be designed so that users learn, at the latest by the first interaction, that they are communicating with an AI. This is excepted in cases where it is obvious from the context. Violations of the transparency obligations can result in fines of up to 15 million euros or 3 percent of global annual turnover.

Do car dealerships have to train their employees in AI competence?

Yes. Art. 4 of the AI Act has applied since February 2, 2025, and requires operators of AI systems to ensure, to the best of their ability, that their staff have sufficient AI competence. According to Haufe, the obligation already applies when an employee uses a language model for research. The Digital Omnibus did not postpone it. According to Noerr, the obligation is relevant for both liability and employment law.

Am I allowed to use ChatGPT at my car dealership, and what about data protection?

According to the AUTOHAUS panel from August 2026, 57 percent of dealerships use standard solutions like ChatGPT or Copilot. At the same time, 41 percent name data protection and compliance as one of the biggest problems with using AI. This guide does not contain a data protection assessment, because we had no verified source with an AI connection available for it.

Am I liable for errors in AI-generated vehicle descriptions?

Under § 434 (3) sentence 1 no. 2 BGB, goods only meet the objective requirements if they have characteristics that the buyer can expect, taking into account the seller's public statements, particularly in advertising. A faulty statement in an AI-generated listing description therefore remains a statement by the dealer. This guide reflects the legal situation and does not replace legal advice.
